
Rio Grande do Sul Port Complex Sees 7.48% Growth in January Cargo Throughput

With 326 vessel calls in January, the Rio Grande do Sul port complex closed the first month of 2025 with a 7.48% increase in cargo throughput. The terminals operated by Portos RS collectively handled 3,562,589 tonnes, with the Port of Rio Grande leading the growth, recording a 9.44% year-on-year increase.
At Rio Grande, cargo operations across the public quay and private terminals in the industrial district totaled 3,450,632 tonnes. Dry bulk cargo accounted for 57.3% of the total volume, followed by general cargo at 35% and liquid bulk at 7.7%.
Sulfate cargoes recorded the most significant surge, increasing 613.43% compared to January 2024. Phosphate shipments also grew sharply, rising 187.11%. Meat exports saw a 39.27% increase, while pulp shipments expanded by 29.92%.
Container throughput continued its strong performance, with the Rio Grande complex handling 84,643 TEUs, reflecting a 46.27% increase from the same period last year.

Exports in this first month were destined for Vietnam (449,266 t), China (403,103 t), Saudi Arabia (131,329 t), South Korea (120,336 t), and the United States (89,356 t). Imports originated from China (267,743 t), Argentina (184,714t), Peru (57,537t), Norway (54,253 t,) and the United States (50,924 t).
Pelotas Terminal Performance
The Port of Pelotas handled 89,093 tonnes in January, with timber logs—primarily for pulp production—accounting for 86,302 tonnes. Clinker, the raw material for cement production, contributed 2,791 tonnes.
Porto Alegre Cargo Throughput
At the Port of Porto Alegre, the total throughput for January reached 28,864 tonnes. The main commodities handled included:
Fertilizer raw materials – 12,819 tonnes
Wheat – 10,743 tonnes
Salt – 5,302 tonnes
