In January of this year, the public ports of Rio Grande do Sul saw a total throughput of 3,312,520 tonnes. This includes activity at facilities in Rio Grande, Pelotas, and Porto Alegre, as well as private and leased terminals within the Rio Grande port complex.
As the primary gateway between Rio Grande do Sul’s productive units and the global market, the Port of Rio Grande alone handled 3,153,062 tons, marking a notable 4.56% increase from last year. Meanwhile, Pelotas Port contributed 91,595 tonnes to the tally, with the Port of Porto Alegre wrapping up the month with 67,863 tonnes.
Solid bulk cargo emerged as the public company’s top cargo category, totaling 2,103,863 tonnes, followed by general cargo at 1,010,161 tonnes, and liquid bulk at 198,496 tonnes.
Comparing year-on-year figures, the public ports of Rio Grande do Sul posted a positive growth rate of 4.88%. Notably, the Port of Porto Alegre also experienced an uptick compared to 2023, climbing from 39,838 to 67,683 tonnes.
During the first month of the year, the ports managed by Portos RS welcomed 310 vessels. Of these, 252 docked at the Port of Rio Grande, 38 at the Port of Pelotas, and 20 at the public wharf in Porto Alegre. This robust maritime traffic underscores the crucial role of water
rborne transportation in driving the economic engine of Rio Grande do Sul.
Fernando Estima, the manager overseeing planning and development, hailed these results as a promising start to 2024. “We’re kicking off the year on a high note, particularly with strong performances in Rio Grande and Porto Alegre. With expectations of a bountiful harvest ahead, we’re optimistic about the prospects for another successful year,” Estima remarked.
