Rio Grande Port announces 6% throughput increase

Solid bulk was the most handled cargo type in the public ports of Rio Grande do Sul from January to May this year, reaching over ten million tonnes. Portos RS released the results on the morning of the 22nd, based on data collected and compiled by the Public Company’s statistics division.
During this period, the Port of Rio Grande experienced a throughput growth of 6.04% compared to the same period last year, reaching a total of 15,833,814 tonnes. The public wharf and the industrial district’s private terminals received 1,280 vessels, including merchant ships and barges.
Soybeans are leading the list of goods with positive shifts in movements, which experienced an increase of 88.64%. It was followed by urea (32.91%), phosphate (31.56%), soymeal (19.05%), and potassium chloride (11.44%). Additionally, the flow of containers increased by 10.21%, totaling 244,649 units.
In terms of the origin of imports, Argentina remains in the lead with 456,247 tonnes, followed by China (398,655 tonnes), Canada (283,904 tonnes), Morocco (236,153 tonnes), Saudi Arabia (233,202 tonnes), United States (227,933 tonnes), Russia (207,704 tonnes), Peru (173,901 tonnes), Germany (135,049 tonnes), and Algeria (132,602 tonnes).
Regarding export destinations, China holds the first place with 2,032,401 tonnes. This is followed by Indonesia (765,623 tonnes), Vietnam (434,679 tonnes), Portugal (397,950 tonnes), United States (391,559 tonnes), Saudi Arabia (358,601 tonnes), Morocco (336,021 tonnes), Spain (281,470 tonnes), Mexico (230,155 tonnes), and Thailand (229,936 tonnes).
Port of Pelotas
During this period, the Port of Pelotas received 214 vessels, all barges used for transporting goods on the Lagoa dos Patos waterway. The total cargo volume moved was 520,554 tonnes, consisting of 436,732 tonnes of wood logs and an additional 83,822 tonnes of clinker, which is cement in its raw phase.
Port of Porto Alegre
From January to May 2023, 52 vessels passed through the Porto Alegre Port, carrying goods and inputs that are essential for the economy. During this period, the port received 216,082 tonnes of inputs used for fertilizer production, 36,854 tonnes of barley, 28,577 tonnes of beef tallow, 7,703 tonnes of wheat, and another 219 tonnes of general cargo.
Solid bulk at the forefront
The operations in the public ports of Rio Grande do Sul in the first five months of the year were dominated by solid bulk, involving 10,058,915 tonnes. The Port of Rio Grande accounted for 9,714,454 tonnes, Pelotas for 83,822 tonnes, and Porto Alegre for 260,639 tonnes. General cargo followed closely with 4,882,412 tonnes and liquid bulk with 1,702,476 tonnes.
