On Wednesday, August 7, the Brazilian Waterborne Transportation Agency (Antaq) released new information on cargo throughput in Brazilian public ports. Between January and June 2024, Brazil handled 231.6 million tonnes, representing an increase of 8.37% compared to the same period in the previous year. Including private ports, Brazil’s total throughput volume reached 644.76 million tonnes, an increase of 4.28% compared to the first half of 2023. Among public ports, the Port of Rio Grande ranked as the fifth largest in cargo throughput in the semester, at some 12.4 million tonnes.

This result is especially remarkable considering the climate tragedy that hit Rio Grande do Sul in May, with repercussions in all economic sectors in the state.

In addition to the public port, the Rio Grande port complex includes several private terminals, totaling 18,531,991 tonnes handled in the first half of 2024.

“Since its creation, Portos RS has been striving to make the ports of Rio Grande do Sul more competitive on the national scene. Thirty percent of Rio Grande do Sul’s economy is currently under our purview, and a significant amount of that volume travels via the Port of Rio Grande to the global market,” commented Cristiano Klinger, the president of Portos RS. “Being ranked among the top five ports in terms of throughput for the first half of the year is a source of great pride for all of us and shows that we are aligned towards the goal of becoming a reference in the Southern Cone,” he added.

According to Antaq, the sector’s growth was driven by containerized cargo coupled with solid and liquid bulk activities. In the first half of the year, containerized cargo reached a record 73.3 million tonnes, an increase of 22.72% compared to the same period last year.

First Place in Container Throughput Growth

Additionally, Portos RS won two categories in the fifth edition of the Portos Brasil Award, placing it first in Container Throughput Growth and third in the evolution of the Port Authority Management Index (IGAP). This occurred on August 7. This acknowledgment attests to the Rio Grande do Sul Ports’ ability and competence to have a positive economic impact on both the state and the nation.
