Rio Grande shipyard resumes naval operations after five years

Amid the crisis in the shipping sector, the Rio Grande Shipyard returned to carrying out naval activities on the 28th after a five-year stoppage,  The Rio Grande do Sul shipyard is operated by Ecovix, which has undergone a judicial recovery process in recent years.

The project that marks the resumption of the shipyard’s activities will be repairs to be carried out on the Siem Helix I vessel, owned by Siem Offshore. The vessel works in the area of well intervention in the Campos Basin. It will remain in Rio Grande for 45 days to receive the services, which Ecovix will carry out in partnership with DockBrasil. It is estimated that the work will generate around 500 local jobs.

Ecovix’s judicial reorganization plan was ratified in 2018. Between 2016 and 2020, the shipyard’s dike was obstructed with blocks of platforms remaining from contracts that were suspended, which prevented the performance of services in the naval area. Last year, Rio Grande, which is in the city of the same name, in Rio Grande do Sul, received a shipment of cattle bound for Turkey and Lebanon.

Now, with the resumption of maritime activities, the government of Rio Grande do Sul has a project to attract new investments and optimize the use of the port and backyard areas around the shipyard. In addition, Ecovix envisages expanding operations at the shipyard beyond vessel-repair services, such as ship dismantling and decommissioning activities and use as a port terminal.
