Rumo and Andali about to expand fertilizer terminal in Goiás

Rumo and Andali, a firm active in the fertilizer market, inaugurated a transshipment rail terminal in Rio Verde, in the Brazilian state of Goiás, on August 9. The new complex will allow fertilizers to be transported from the Port of Santos (SP) to Goiás through the central branch of the North-South railway and industrialized at the Goiás facility.
Because of the high demand for the services, the proposal to expand the capacity of the transshipment port was pushed forward, resulting in an extra R$ 160 million investment in the project.
On-site “mixing” (industrialization) of the fertilizers will also be available. Andali funded the total investment, while Rumo will be in charge of the rail transportation business. “We have a grain operation in the Rio Verde complex, and soon we will have a fertilizer facility there. We are going to meet the main demands of agribusiness,” Pedro Palma, Rumo’s commercial vice president, told Estadão/Broadcast.
According to him, the company will also inaugurate a fuel operation in Rio Verde in the middle of next year. “We already have a partner working on it,” he says. “As we have done in other situations at the central North-South rail branch, we always favor partnerships in this type of process to borrow their expertise.”
The president of Andali, Rafael Vaccari, says that more than 80% of the volume of fertilizer imports in the country comes through Paranaguá (PR), São Francisco do Sul, or Santos, with all transport done by trucks.
“We know that long road routes are inefficient in terms of cost and driver safety, not to mention the environmental effect,” he argues. “The project’s goal is to get the fertilizer in Santos, carry it via Rumo trains, and have Andali receive the product in Rio Verde to distribute it to manufacturers in the region or mix it to ensure more competitiveness.”
The Andali fertilizer terminal will handle 1.5 million tonnes of fertilizer, according to estimates. The initial stage of the project called for mixing 500 thousand tonnes each year. “Because of the high demand, we made an extra investment and are raising the yearly manufacturing capacity to roughly 750 thousand tonnes,” Vaccari explains.
