The Board of Directors of Rumo approved the start of construction of a railway extension in the state of Mato Grosso, said the company on November 3rd. The railroad will facilitate the state’s grain production to the Port of Santos in São Paulo.
Construction is expected to take three years, with start-up scheduled for the 1st quarter of 2026 and an estimated investment of R$4 to R$4.5 billion. These projections are only valid for the portion of the works that will connect Rondonópolis to Campo Verde – a stretch of 211 km in length – although the project also foresees the connection of Cuiabá and Lucas do Rio Verde.
In August, the president of Rumo, João Alberto Abreu, said in an interview with Poder360 that the company had to update the findings of a series of studies for the construction of the railroad. “The fact that inflation greatly impacted the costs of several products made us review a series of studies,” he said.
In 2021, Rumo signed a contract to construct the Ferronorte railway track extension in Mato Grosso under state law.
The main objective of the construction of the new rail stretch is to drain grain production. According to Rumo, the Campo Verde terminal will have an installed capacity of between 10 to 30 million tonnes per year.
