Rumo signs contract for Mato Grosso railroad

Rumo, the logistics company of the Cosan Group, signed a contract with the government of Mato Grosso on Sept. 20 to construct a new railway in the state. The railway was named the Ferrovia Autorizada de Transporte Olacyr de Moraes (Fato) – a tribute to the agribusiness businessman who built Ferronorte, later renamed Malha Norte by the company.
The 730-km new development will be an extension of the current railway operated by Rumo that runs from the Port of Santos (SP) to Rondonópolis (MT). Two new branches will be built: one to Cuiabá and the other to Lucas do Rio Verde (MT), north of Mato Grosso, where the region’s agricultural load is concentrated.
“The railroad will be fundamental for the expansion and competitiveness of agribusiness. In addition, it will be a corridor for the industry. We are going to connect Mato Grosso to the main consumption centers in the Southeast”, stated the governor, Mauro Mendes (DEM).
There is still a lack of environmental licenses for the project; these should be issued within six months, he says. The work is expected to start towards the end of 2022 or the beginning of 2023.
The executive project for the railway is being finalized. The initial estimate is that the entire project will require investments of between R$ 9 billion and R$ 11 billion, according to the president of Rumo, Beto Abreu. The forecast is to complete construction between the years 2028 and 2030, but the start of operation should come in stages. The first stage should start in 2025, with the opening of one or two terminals about 200km north of Rondonópolis, he says.
