The logistics operator Rumo is expected to begin operating the terminal in Rio Verde (GO) in the second half of 2021, thus inaugurating yet another stage in the central section of the North-South railroad (Malha Central). The first stage began in March this year, with the São Simão (GO) terminal opening.
“The Rio Verde terminal should be ready soon, so let us take advantage of the corn crop; we will be able to use this terminal in the second half of the year. We have a huge capacity in this terminal, twice as much as we had in Rondonópolis before the improvements we made there. But we are not going to start using all the capacity. We have a considerable ramp-up, and we will use it a lot in the second semester in Rio Verde”, said Ricardo Lewin, the group’s financial director, in a conference call this Friday about the results of the first quarter, when the company recorded a profit of R$ 175 million.
He also pointed out that starting in March, volume will increase considerably at the São Simão terminal.
Rumo says that this year’s corn crop will be very large. But there are still many uncertainties regarding the handling of this cargo in the fourth quarter, according to the director. “We will have a large corn crop, an increase of 8 million tons in Brazil, 6 for export. Mato Grosso should see a reduction of 1 million, which seems to be conservative. It is important to say that the export window will be smaller for corn and to note that, this year, concerning the corn crop, we are twice as contracted as we were in the same period. We have twice as many take-or-pay agreements; the hiring is doubled. The point is that in the fourth quarter there is a lot of uncertainty, due not only to the delay in the soybean harvest but to climatic conditions. These factors have delayed the commercialization of corn,” he said.
The project to extend the North Network to the city of Lucas do Rio Verde (MT) is a priority for Rumo, compared to new projects by the federal government, said the director.
