Russia cites ‘sabotage’ and suggests halting fertilizer shipments

On March 4th, the Russian Ministry of Industry and Commerce recommended that the country’s fertilizer exporters suspend foreign sales until the situation in local ports normalizes and cargo deliveries are once again guaranteed.
According to the Ministry, farmers in various parts of the world cannot receive fertilizers from Russia due to supply chain sabotage perpetrated by different foreign logistics companies. For the Russian government, the interruption in the shipment of fertilizers abroad could affect the “national security of several countries and lead to crop failure and food shortages in the medium term” for hundreds of millions of people in Eastern Europe, Latin America, as well as South and Southeast Asia.
Russian shipments were already at a standstill due to financial sanctions imposed on the Kremlin over the war against Ukraine and the stance adopted by shipowners and shipping companies operating at the Black Sea. However, the supply of fertilizers to Russian farmers is guaranteed according to the government.
“Given the current situation with foreign logistics operators and the associated risks, the Russian Ministry of Industry and Commerce was forced to recommend to Russian producers a temporary suspension of the shipment of Russian fertilizers for export until carriers resume the normal pace of work and provide guarantees for the full implementation of Russian fertilizer export deliveries,” the Ministry noted.
