The Container Terminal (Tecon) at the Port of Salvador set a record for cargo handling for the second consecutive month. There was a 23.7% increase in August compared to the same month last year. A total of 46,300 TEUs were handled, which is 8,900 more than in 2023, with a notable increase in export and cabotage (coastal shipping within Brazil) cargo. In July, the terminal had already recorded the highest overall container movement in its history.
Export cargo increased by 26%, with 8,800 full TEUs. Among the most significant were cotton produced in the Matopiba region (420%), chemicals (+21%), and pulp (+21%), which were destined for Asia, the US, and Europe. Cabotage saw a 28% increase, with 9,600 TEUs, primarily involving materials from the plastics and polymers (+44%) and chemicals (+52%) sectors, as well as beverages (+76%).
“We have proactively provided a structure equipped with cutting-edge technology to ensure Bahia stays ahead, capable of accommodating the largest ships on the Brazilian coast, identifying opportunities, strengthening existing businesses, and contributing to the search for the best solutions for each sector,” says Demir Lourenço, Executive Director of Tecon Salvador, who believes the results reflect the operational efficiency that the Salvador terminal has been striving to develop.
Transshipment
The transshipment service, which involves repositioning full and empty containers and connecting terminals through hub ports, saw a 37% monthly increase (12,100 TEUs), with more connections to and from Singapore, China, and India, as well as domestic connections to Paranaguá (PR), Pecém (CE), Navegantes (SC), Manaus (AM), and Suape (PE).
