Santa Catarina pork producers keen to export to Canada in hope of milder crisis ahead

After Canada granted licenses to seven Santa Catarina-based meatpackers to export pork to the North American country, entities expect to see an increase in exports and a consequent relief for the crisis the sector currently faces. The state is the largest pork exporter in Brazil, corresponding to 55.85% of the country’s total.
The meatpacking units licensed are in Chapecó, Itapiranga, São Miguel, Videira, Joaçaba, Presidente Getúlio and Rio do Sul. Only meatpacking plants in Santa Catarina will be able to sell to the country because that was the only Brazilian state recognized as a foot-and-mouth disease-free area without vaccination, which Canada requires.
According to Sindicarne, negotiations between companies from Santa Catarina and Canada should take place in the next ten days, when it will be possible to guess the volume to be exported.
Pork producers in Santa Catarina see the licensing of these plants with relief; They have been facing a crisis due to high production costs and low consumption, commented Enori Barbieri, the vice president of the Federation of Agriculture and Livestock of the State of Santa Catarina (Faesc).
Canada is the third-largest global exporter of pork but also an essential international buyer, with purchases of around 250 thousand tonnes recorded throughout 2021. In other words, the demand for production in Santa Catarina should be great.
Santa Catarina stands out in the Brazilian pork industry
Between January and May 2022, Brazil exported 409,600 tons of pork. Of this total, 228.7 thousand tonnes were exported by Santa Catarina (55.85% of the entire national volume), according to data from the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA). Sales totaled $507,200.

The three southern states — Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and Paraná — accounted for more than 94% of the country’s pork exports in 2022.
Brazil’s primary customer is China. The Philippines and Chile are among the countries that buy pork from Santa Catarina the most. According to Sindicarne, the United States has rapidly expanded and will be one of the top locations in the coming years.
