On November 26, Santos Brasil officially inaugurated the extension and deepening works of the Tecon Santos pier at the port of Santos. The company thus concludes the first phase of the terminal’s expansion and modernization project, which added investments of around R$ 450 million and added another 400,000 TEU to increase its operating capacity.
In addition, Tecon Santos is now the only container terminal in South America with the capacity to simultaneously receive up to three New Panamax ships, measuring 366m – the largest vessels expected to arrive in the country.
Begun in 2019, the works expanded the Tecon Santos pier by 220 meters to 1,510 meters. They also deepened the pier and reinforced the structure for the installation of rails for new state-of-the-art portainers, along 1,090 meters; and increased the maximum depth of the pier to 16 meters.
In addition to civil works, the first stage of expansion and modernization of the terminal involved acquisitions of state-of-the-art equipment (two new portainers 50 meters high, 70 meters long, and capable of handling up to 100 tons; 30 trailers; and 30 terminal tractors for cargo handling in the yard – all already in operation) and investments in projects in the IT area, which include the purchase and implementation of a new Terminal Operating System (TOS), CyberLogitec’s OPUS, and the acquisition of software and equipment that allow greater use of artificial intelligence in planning and operations.
The total investment foreseen in the Tecon Santos expansion and modernization project is in the order of R$ 1.5 billion, in updated values, until 2031.
