Santos Brasil has received approval from Brazil’s National Petroleum Agency (ANP) to commence operations at the expanded TGL 1 terminal, one of three liquid bulk assets operational at the Port of Itaqui, Maranhão. The expansion boosts the terminal’s capacity from 54,000 m³ to 85,000 m³, marking a significant milestone as 2024 begins.

Meanwhile, the TGL 3 expansion—completed last year and adding 30,000 m³ of capacity—is still awaiting authorization from the ANP to kickstart operations, expected by the first quarter of 2025.

Construction is also underway on TGL 2, which will have a capacity of 85,000 m³ upon completion later this year. Once all three terminals are fully operational, Santos Brasil will boast a combined capacity of roughly 200,000 m³ at the Port of Itaqui, cementing its role as a key player in the region’s liquid bulk market, closely tied to agribusiness sector growth.

Santos Brasil acquired its Itaqui terminals through an auction at B3 in April 2021, securing two brownfield facilities and one greenfield project, marking its entry into the liquid bulk segment.

The company’s upgrades to the terminals include new tanks, receiving and dispatch platforms, and storage infrastructure for diesel, gasoline, and biofuels. Upon completion, the terminals will also feature four new pier lines for liquid bulk handling, with access to the port’s three public berths dedicated to fuel operations. Santos Brasil is investing more than R$600 million to expand its fuel handling capacity at Itaqui.

Carlos Quintero, Santos Brasil’s Director of Liquid Bulk, noted the company’s rapid progress in the fuel sector since entering the market two years ago. “We are growing our market share, and the added 30,000 m³ capacity at TGL 1 is another important step toward meeting customer demand at the Port of Itaqui with the level of excellence Santos Brasil is known for,” he said.

Quintero also highlighted that the terminals received customs clearance last year, enabling them to handle both imported and exported fuels under Federal Revenue authorization.

The Port of Itaqui is a strategic hub for distributing petroleum products across Brazil’s Northeast, North, and Midwest regions. Its high-quality infrastructure and strong connectivity to major rail networks make it a vital logistics corridor for the Midwest and support demand in the North and Northeast. Santos Brasil’s liquid bulk terminals integrate seamlessly with road, rail, pipeline, and maritime transportation, and the port accommodates vessels up to 155,000 tonnes.
