Santos Brasil celebrated one year of operations at the Itaqui Port in November and initiated the construction of its third liquid bulk terminal, TGL2. Concurrently, the company continues the expansion of terminals TGL1 and TGL3, which began in April this year.
These actions will increase the current capacity from 50,000 m³ to 191,000 m³ by 2026 (roughly one-fourth of the expected total capacity of the port), positioning the company as a significant player in a port with tremendous growth potential linked to agribusiness.
Ongoing construction includes building new tanks for the reception, shipment, and storage of diesel, gasoline, and biofuels. Upon completion, the terminals will feature four new dedicated pier lines for fuels with access to the port’s three public berths handling liquid bulk operations.
Santos Brasil acquired the three Itaqui terminals in an auction held at B3 in April 2021, marking the beginning of the company’s involvement in liquid bulk. Combined with concessions of R$ 157.3 million and initial investments of R$ 500 million in construction, over R$ 600 million is allocated to fuel movement growth at the Maranhão port.
Itaqui serves as a distribution hub for oil derivatives in Brazil’s Northeast, North, and Midwest regions. With robust infrastructure and connections to vital railways, the port serves as a strategic corridor to the Midwest of Brazil and markets in the North and Northeast. Santos Brasil’s liquid bulk terminals are linked to road, rail, pipeline, and maritime transportation modes, and the port can accommodate ships of up to 155,000 tons DWT.
According to Carlos Quintero, Director of Liquid Bulk at Santos Brasil, the company has quickly established itself with high-quality service despite its short tenure in the fuel market. “We have come to help meet the growing demand of our clients and are expanding our market share. Leveraging the excellence of Santos Brasil, a reference in port operations and logistics, along with an experienced and specialized team in liquid bulk operations, we work with utmost safety and dedication,” he said.
