Santos Brasil is set to expedite the completion of the Tecon Santos expansion project, increasing its capacity from 2.4 million TEU to 3 million TEU, five years ahead of schedule. Initially planned for 2031, the expanded operating capacity will now be provided as soon as 2026, confirmed the company on Thursday (4).
The company is fast-tracking the purchase of equipment and accelerating the construction of new yards. The expansion of Tecon Santos, which began in 2019, involves an investment of BRL 2.6 billion, with approximately BRL 1.3 billion already disbursed. In 2024, an additional R$420 million will be allocated to the terminal, increasing its capacity from the current 2.4 million TEU to 2.6 million TEU by the end of the year.
From 2026 to 2031, the remaining investments will focus on replacing equipment, improving traffic and service levels, decarbonization, and upgrading systems. However, all measures impacting capacity will be completed by 2026.

Strategy
Antonio Carlos Sepúlveda, CEO of Santos Brasil, stated that revving investments in Tecon Santos will ensure that the Port of Santos may meet its growing demand, which has seen an average container growth of 3.3% per year over the last decade.
“Our strategy consists in maintaining a 200,000 TEU capacity available at the terminal at all times, ensuring exporters, importers, and shipowners have enough room for their cargo, with a high level of service at the country’s most important port,” Sepúlveda said.
The expansion project initially included deepening the pier’s depth and extending its length by 220 meters, totaling 1,200 meters. This will make Tecon Santos the only terminal in South America capable of accommodating three New Panamax ships at once, hence their status as the largest vessels that make it to Brazilian shores.
The company is currently building a new container storage yard. Existing administrative buildings will be demolished to create space for this area, and the energy substation and scales will be relocated. A new administrative building will be constructed near the entrance.
Additionally, electrification works are underway in the yard to expand the use of electrical equipment. One of the measures taken includes increasing the number of sockets for refrigerated containers to 3,000 units.
