On August 2nd, the TEV (Vehicle Terminal) owned by Santos Brasil received the shipment of electric cars in its history: 324 units that were brought on the Grande Sapphire ship. A new batch of 430 cars is expected to come on board the vessel Taipan at the beginning of September, and by the end of the year, another 500 units should arrive at the terminal.
According to Danilo Ramos, Commercial Director of Port Operations at Santos Brasil, this movement confirmed that the demand for this type of vehicle is growing, as they are less polluting and more efficient in energy consumption. “Until now, the arrival of electric cars was more sporadic, never in large batches, but we believe that this will be the norm for now on,” he says.
According to a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA), in 2021, 6.6 million electric cars were sold worldwide, twice as much as the previous year, now representing 10% of all new car transactions. In the first quarter of 2022, two million units were sold.
In 2020, Santos Brasil equipped the TEV with two chargers for electric cars, leaving the terminal well-equipped to meet the growing demand for this type of vehicle. The terminal now features a permanent charger installed on a totem and a mobile charger attached to a Company vehicle sued to charge automobiles that lose their load as the ships land, minimizing the need for towing.
