The number of new companies in Santos, on the coast of São Paulo, grew 38% last year compared to 2020. In 2021, 6,687 companies initiated activities compared to 4,852 in the previous year. The local index, driven by activities linked to the Port of Santos, was higher, in the same period, than the national average (19.7%), according to data from the Ministry of Economy, and state (28.46%), according to the Junta State of São Paulo (Jucesp).
The Port of Santos has grown steadily over the last 12 years, creating a suitable environment for the city’s business expansion.
According to data released by Santos Port Authority, the port’s annual growth was above the GDP’s average for the period. From 2009 to 2021, the yearly increase in tonnage at the Port of Santos was 4.9%, while container rates increased by 6.6%. During the same period, the Brazilian GDP grew at a rate of 1.1% each year on average, which explains the industry’s appeal to Santos.
Adriano Leocadio, the municipal finance secretary, writes that, in addition to the natural impulse of economic activity with the end of the pandemic, the biggest ally of growth is the debureaucratization of procedures. For example, the average time to open a business in the municipality is three days.
