Santos City Hall to Map Job Qualifications for Cargo Transport Workers
Aug, 21, 2024 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202434
The Santos City Hall will assess the qualifications required for workers in the cargo transport sector and refer potential candidates to free training courses through partnerships with the Municipality. The goal is to ensure that professionals receive the necessary training for available job opportunities in the market.
This initiative follows the signing of a cooperation agreement between the Municipal Administration and the São Paulo Coast Union of Commercial Cargo Transport Companies (Sindisan). The deal, signed on the 13th and posted in the Official Gazette of the Municipality on the 15th, is valid for one year and aims to boost local employment.
Building Connections
According to Elias Francisco da Silva Júnior, the Secretary of Port Affairs and Employment of Santos, the cooperation agreement seeks to connect companies affiliated with Sindisan to the Public Employment and Work Center in the City (located at Rua João Pessoa, 246, inside the Poupatempo building in the city center).
“At the Public Employment Center, workers apply for unemployment benefits and are automatically added to the national employment registry, allowing us to refer them to job openings,” Elias Júnior explains.
He also emphasized that the agreement prioritizes job opportunities for local residents. “Santos currently has 184,000 registered workers. We’ve noticed that while the City is responsible for most of the employment in the region, these jobs are not always filled by residents of Santos,” he says.
The Secretary highlighted that there is competition from workers nationwide for job openings, mainly due to online employment platforms. “Through the Public Employment Center, we aim to give priority to local residents for job opportunities,” he states.
Union Support
In a statement, Sindisan said the partnership will streamline the worker selection process. “Companies face challenges in conducting recruitment processes, and this initiative will undoubtedly contribute significantly to that effort.”
The union also highlighted another advantage of the partnership: the ability to receive requests for resumes from people with disabilities (PWDs). The union noted that the Public Employment Center “has a solid and reputable structure.”
