Next week will mark the opening of the public consultation for the Santos-Guarujá underwater tunnel project. In an interview on March 5th, Governor Tarcísio de Freitas announced that more details on the project would be available starting March 13, the data which the public will be able to pitch in ideas to improve the project.
“Everything is set to open this public consultation next week. Both agencies, Antaq (National Waterway Transportation Agency, federal) and Artesp (São Paulo State Transportation Agency) are working on it. On the 13th, it will be ready,” stated the governor.
The public consultation on the Santos tunnel is expected to be initially available on the websites of Artesp and Antaq, but in-person public hearings are also planned. This is a mandatory step before construction works are cleared.
The tunnel is estimated to cost R$ 6 billion and will be funded in partnership between the State and Federal governments.
The link between Santos and Guarujá has been part of the state’s plans since February 2023, when the project entered theSão Paulo’s Investment Partnership Program (PPI-SP).
The total length of the tunnel will be 1.5 km, through an 870-meter immersed tunnel beneath the port channel.
The tunnel will consist of six pre-modulated concrete modules. They will be built in a dry dock and transported by floaters for immersion, fitting, and fixation on the canal bed, which will also see its depth increased.
