Santos Port Authority Eyes Federal Fund for Green Hydrogen Production

Anderson Pomini, the president of the Santos Port Authority (APS), presented a proposal for producing green hydrogen in the Itatinga Hydroelectric Plant in Bertioga to the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Luciana Santos, during a meeting held last Tuesday (7) in Brasília. On this occasion, the minister suggested the project could apply for resources from the National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development (FNDCT), from the ministry.
In a statement, APS stated that it has “total interest” in submitting the project to FNDCT. “The team from the Superintendence of Environment, Health, and Occupational Safety (Sumas) is awaiting the publication of the program’s call notice.”
During the meeting, Pomini demonstrated the Port of Santos‘ advantage in making the project viable because it already has infrastructure. “We already have a hydroelectric plant called Itatinga at the port.” Santos Port Authority would be able to produce green hydrogen with the abundant water it has available by installing an electrolyzer next to the plant, then store it and transport it through various modes, including pipelines, to consumers, including port terminals, ships docked at the quay, as well as companies, industries, and residences in the region. “There is also the option of exporting the surplus,” he added.
With the production of green hydrogen, one of the initiatives is the electrification of the quay, allowing ships docked at the port to stop using fossil fuels. It is one of the main projects associated with a more sustainable port.
Green hydrogen is considered an alternative to fossil fuels, made from clean energy with low or no carbon emissions. Additionally, burning green hydrogen results in water.
During the meeting, the president of APS also presented to the minister the project for implementing a technological center in Warehouse 7, focused on port innovation, with the presence of incubators and startups.
“We are focused on energy transition; it is our priority, and what you have presented here aligns with what we defend,” Minister Luciana Santos pointed out. “It is an area that we lead; we have one of the cleanest energy matrices in the world, and you, with the hydroelectric plant, have a competitiveness variable that puts you in a more strategic position to advance in this challenge,” she added.
The Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation, when contacted, did not confirm, as of the closing of this edition, when FNDCT will publish the program notice.
