Week 202509

Representatives from Santos Port Authority (APS) are in Valencia, Spain, this week to explore new decarbonization technologies at an event organized by the Valenciaport Foundation, the local port authority. APS’s Director of Operations, Edilberto Ferreira Beto Mendes, and the Manager of Basic Sanitation, Energy, and Conservation, Rafael Apolinário dos Santos, are attending the International Certification in Energy Transition and Port Decarbonization course.

Representing the Port of Santos’s environmental sector, Beto Mendes emphasized the importance of the discussions on decarbonization, “a global priority due to climate change.”

He noted that the event is entirely focused on the port industry, featuring panels and debates on energy transition. Topics include developing decarbonization plans for ports, renewable energy generation in port environments, green hydrogen applications in ports, results from the EU-funded H2Ports project, onshore power supply (OPS) solutions, and the current state and future trends of European ports.

Technical Visits

The APS representatives will also conduct technical visits to the Port of Valencia, where they will tour MSC’s electrified terminal, and to Spain’s National Hydrogen Center near Madrid, a leading research facility.

“This mission builds on last year’s visit to Hamburg, Germany, where I joined other APS operations professionals at an event on alternative marine fuels. This will be valuable for both me and the company as we gain insights into best practices from ports worldwide,” Mendes stated.

Finally, he emphasized the goal of bringing the latest industry trends back to APS. “Ports from various countries will showcase their initiatives, and we aim to integrate those insights into the Port of Santos’ environmental agenda.”
