Santos Port Expansion Project Includes New Container Terminal

Port of Santos polygon is set to undergo expansion in a strategic area: the Ministry of Ports and Airports (MPor), with the city’s approval, has decided to include the so-called Vila dos Criadores within the jurisdiction of the Santos Port Authority (APS). With this decision, the port gains yet another waterfront location, the last available for expansion on the right bank, which will be turned into a terminal similar to what was proposed for STS 10.
This decision was reached on Wednesday (10/4) by the Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, in a meeting with the president of the Port Authority, Anderson Pomini. For the minister, the inclusion of this site in the Polygon – that is, within the limits of the Organized Port – will simultaneously address a social issue and meet the expansion needs of the largest port in the southern hemisphere. “Everyone wins, the community and the entire Brazilian port logistics sector,” emphasized Costa Filho.

Anderson Pomini, president of APS, highlighted that the measure reflects a holistic view of the port and not just in regards to a specific type of cargo: “The minister and our current leadership have clearly expressed the need to expand container capacity, which will involve intensifying operations at BTP and Santos Brasil,” explained Pomini. “Furthermore, we aim to strengthen the relationship between the port and the city by relocating the cruise terminal, Concais, to a section of Ecoporto. This relocation will integrate it with Valongo Park, marking the first time in the 132-year history of the Organized Port of Santos that such a space will be open to public visitation.”
Housing and Environment – The Vila dos Criadores, spanning a total area of 420,000 m², is located near the Casqueiro River, on the border between the municipalities of Santos and Cubatão, between the estuary and the Anchieta Highway, in the Alemoa neighborhood. The site is currently occupied irregularly by approximately 9,000 people squatters, who will be relocated to suitable residences, a condition that will be part of the requirement imposed on the future lessee of the last undeveloped area on the right bank of the Port.
In addition to providing housing for the residents of the area, vacating the premises will also solve an environmental liability issue stemming from a landfill that once stood there.
