The governor of São Paulo, João Doria, and Brazil’s President, Jaír Bolsonaro, met on Tuesday to discuss the Port of Santos privatization among other issues. After the meeting, the governor indicated the government would disclose the model of privatization in the second half of the year, while also revealing some details of the plans being discussed.
Doria mentioned the project will bring about opportunities to invest in certain areas, such as deepening the Santos Port channel to facilitate larger vessels, thus increasing port efficiency. According to the governor this is key to take Santos to the standard seen in some European and Asian ports and should occur within 18 months of privatization.
Santos Port Authority (Codesp) is already studying which services at the port facility can be part of the privatization. The plan is to privatize particular services rather than the whole port. The services that Codesp is considering privatizing include navigation channel management, dredging, and management of land access to the port.
