Santos privatization to go to public consultation by year end

The first version of the project to privatize the Port of Santos should come out by the end of 2021, according to the president of the Santos Port Authority (SPA), Fernando Biral. A few months ago, the government had said that it would open the public consultation in October, but this did not materialize. However, he says that the process is in its final stages. The preliminary forecast is that the new concession will include investments in the order of R$16 billion.
“This week, the studies should be submitted for analysis by the secretariat and the regulatory agency, and soon, the public consultation will be open”, he says.
In parallel to this process, the port plans to bid for another seven terminals by 2022. In addition to the two fuel terminals (STS 08 and STS 08A), whose auction is scheduled for next Friday (the 19th), leases are scheduled for five more areas: a bulk vegetable terminal (STS 11); one for containers (STS 10); one for bulk minerals (STS 53); and two back yards for containers.
According to Biral’s assessment, the schedule will not be affected by the election year. “Lease auctions have no political impact. It’s a consolidated process.”
The tenders – which in some cases should be fierce and yield significant grants – should add to the dock company’s already robust cash flow. SPA ended the third quarter of this year with a total of R$ 1.16 billion in cash and financial investments, an increase of 71.1% over last year.
