Investments in security at the Port of São Francisco do Sul were the focal point of discussions held during the National Meeting of Port and Waterway Authorities last week in Brasília.
During the panel discussion “Initiatives to Enhance Security in Port Complexes,” the port’s president, Cleverton Vieira, outlined the technological innovations implemented at the northern Santa Catarina-based terminal over the past 18 months, with R$ 25 million invested.
One of the key modernization projects was the new access control system for the Grain Terminal, which primarily stores soybeans and corn.
“Twelve cameras were installed to read truck license plates and identify each railcar transporting cargo to the port using Optical Character Recognition (OCR),” Vieira explained.
This system connects with the Federal Revenue Service to transmit real-time cargo information while also integrating with the port’s internal system, known as Portonet, which oversees road and rail deliveries to the Grain Terminal.
“Truck drivers will also reap the benefits, as all the data collected is sent to the truck sorting system, which assigns nearby areas for vehicles to wait for their scheduled loading or unloading,” Vieira added.
He also mentioned that the Grain Terminal’s access control system has been modernized with four new devices for identifying drivers using digital biometrics, as well as automated gates.
Additionally, 111 new cameras were installed to enhance the Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) system, including seven Dome cameras that provide broad coverage.
Significant investments were made in Information Technology in 2024, with the purchase of two image storage devices and ten internet servers.
Monitoring System Overhaul
The port’s surveillance abilities have been improved with the addition of new software from Genetec. This advanced security and monitoring management system, which includes a variety of features to improve safety and operational efficiency, is increasingly being used by port terminals.
“In a port environment, where the transport of goods can present risks, the ability to monitor, analyze, and respond quickly to incidents is vital for maintaining security and operational efficiency,” Vieira explained.
He also added that implementing Genetec is expected to help prevent incidents, improve emergency response, and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
