October set a new benchmark for the Port of São Francisco do Sul, with exports surpassing 1.1 million tonnes—the highest monthly total in its history. Brazilian grain shipments played a pivotal role in achieving this milestone.

During the month, 583,000 tonnes of soybeans and 476,000 tonnes of corn were shipped to China. Additional exports included wood products and steel coils.

Soybeans exported through the northern Santa Catarina terminal accounted for 11% of all Brazilian soybean exports in October, totaling 5.5 million tonnes. At a market price of R$2,300 per tonne, these soybean shipments generated R$2.6 billion in revenue for Brazil.

“This achievement marks a historic moment for the Port of São Francisco, as we’ve never crossed the 1-million-tonne threshold before. Despite the increase in cargo throughput, our average monthly exports in 2024 had been 850,000 tonnes,” said the port’s president, Cleverton Vieira.

The chart below was developed with DataLiner data – a Datamar maritime intelligence product. It shows the volume in record for grains exported through the São Francisco do Sul Port between January 2021 and October 2024.

How the Record Was Achieved

Vieira credited the record to improvements in the Export Corridor, the system responsible for loading grain onto vessels. “Our main focus has been ensuring uninterrupted operations. We’ve done this by investing in regular maintenance and workforce training,” he explained.

He also highlighted the role of Tesc, a leased terminal within the public port, in achieving the milestone. “In October alone, Tesc exported 332,000 tonnes of corn, thanks to recent investments in port infrastructure,” Vieira noted.

October’s Total Cargo Throughput

In October, the port’s total cargo volume reached 1.67 million tonnes, including 588,000 tonnes of imports. Steel products (312,000 tonnes) and fertilizers (264,000 tonnes) were the main contributors to inbound cargo.

This figure represents a 12% increase compared to September when the port handled 1.48 million tonnes.
