São Francisco do Sul Port joins United Nations Global Compact

São Francisco do Sul Port has officially joined the United Nations Global Compact, a major initiative encouraging businesses to adopt practices that foster sustainable growth and social responsibility.

Founded on ten universal principles derived from international declarations on human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption, the Global Compact requires participating organizations to integrate these principles into their day-to-day operations. São Francisco do Sul Port’s commitments include upholding human rights, eradicating child labor, and eliminating workplace discrimination.

Additionally, the port is committed to promoting environmental responsibility, fostering the development of eco-friendly technologies, and actively combating corruption. Going forward, the port will be obligated to provide annual reports to the UN, outlining its progress toward these sustainability and ethical goals.

By becoming a signatory, São Francisco do Sul Port joins a select group of around 60 ports globally that have embraced this incentive for sustainable and socially responsible practices. This move also positions it as one of the few Brazilian ports committed to the Compact.

The United Nations Global Compact stands as the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative, boasting over 16,000 members, including companies and organizations from 160 countries.

Pablo Fonseca, Director of Operations and Logistics at the port, sees this commitment as a pivotal step in modernizing port management. He emphasizes that it aligns with global best practices, marking a significant stride in the port’s dedication to fostering sustainable economies and respecting human rights.

“As we implement our actions, we are aligning with global trends, such as respecting the ecosystem in which we operate and promoting human rights among our collaborators.”

Fonseca points to the forthcoming dredging project in the access channel to the port complex as a tangible example of this commitment, underscoring its dedication to prioritizing the marine life in the Bay of Babitonga.
