São Francisco do Sul seeks solutions for increasing port traffic

With peaks of up to a thousand trucks per day, albeit with an average of just over 500 vehicles, São Francisco do Sul is gearing up to alleviate the impacts of the intense cargo flow at the ports. Among the key projects is the construction of new access lanes to the port terminals, an investment that could involve private sector participation. The truck queues in São Francisco do Sul have prompted an investigation by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, initiated at the beginning of last month, to determine the causes of the traffic congestion. Last week, there was a meeting on the topic at the prosecutor’s office.

The main solutions proposed by a working group formed last year at the São Francisco do Sul Department of Infrastructure and the Union of Port Operators involve expanding lanes at the access points to the port complex, particularly near the terminals, and at the junction between BR-280 and SC-415, the highway that faces the coast. “These are the two critical points,” said Tiago Furlan Lemos, the municipal secretary of Infrastructure.

The base project for the highway expansion has been presented to the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT), and if approved, executive plans will be commissioned. The proposed interventions are at locations where BR-280 will not be enlarged. A third lane segment is being discussed with the state government. Another significant project for mobility in São Francisco do Sul is the reinstatement of the railway bypass project, which is currently in the bidding process and is scheduled to begin construction in 2024. The new branch will eliminate bottlenecks along roads used by trucks as well.

Many fear that traffic congestion will increase without the expansion of access roads. After all, new investments planned for the port complex will increase cargo handling capacity. Consequently, more trucks will head to São Francisco do Sul. The port may contribute to part of the federal highway access expansion.

The procedure opened by the 3rd Public Prosecutor’s Office at the beginning of September is in its initial phase, with information being gathered from the municipality, state government, DNIT, São Francisco do Sul Port, and the Highway Police. The Public Prosecutor’s Office wants to know what is causing the traffic slow-down, with a “large number” of trucks parked on the sides of BR-280 and SC-415. The prosecutor’s office seeks information about the planned measures to address this demand.
