São Paulo Expands Avocado Exports to Chile and Japan

The state of São Paulo, Brazil’s largest avocado producer—responsible for over 40% of national output—has officially launched avocado exports to Chile and Japan, two high-value international markets.
The exports follow phytosanitary missions conducted since 2023 to assess compliance with import requirements. Chile is the world’s second-largest avocado consumer per capita, representing a powerful opportunity.
“Per capita consumption in Chile is around 8 kg per person per year and continues to rise. This year is experimental, but we expect meaningful growth ahead,” said Lígia Carvalho, producer and director at Jaguary, a pioneer in Brazil’s Hass avocado cultivation.
According to Guilherme Piai, São Paulo’s Secretary of Agriculture and Supply, these new trade openings strengthen the competitiveness of the state’s fruit sector. He also emphasized that São Paulo stands out for its ability to meet international phytosanitary standards, attracting further investment to local agriculture.
Japan, one of the world’s largest fresh fruit importers, presents a promising yet challenging opportunity. Exporting to this market involves long-distance logistics, strict quality and safety standards, and air transport requirements.
Production and Domestic Demand
According to data from IEA-Apta (Institute of Agricultural Economics), in 2024, São Paulo produced over 223,000 tons of avocados, with key production hubs in Ourinhos, Mogi Mirim, and São João da Boa Vista.
While domestic avocado demand is rising, Brazilian consumption still lags behind global averages. The avocado Hass, originally from California, is increasingly favored for its nutritional profile—rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber—and its culinary versatility in savory and sweet dishes.
Certification and Export Readiness
To ensure compliance with export protocols, São Paulo’s Coordenadoria de Defesa Agropecuária (CDA) monitors farms and packing houses. The certification process includes technical inspections to ensure pest control measures are followed.
So far, five farms and five packing houses have been officially registered for exporting Hass avocados under the new agreements with Chile and Japan.
