Sao Paulo governor unshakeable in privatizing Port of Santos

The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, defended, once again, the privatization of the Port of Santos on the south coast of São Paulo in a speech on Monday (27). In his view, doing so would bring prosperity to the region.
“I want to privatize the Port of Santos because that would mean the difference between prosperity and poverty in the Santos region,” declared the governor while participating in a forum organized by the Voto group. In addition to Santos, eight other municipalities make up the Metropolitan Region of Santos: Bertioga, Guarujá, Cubatão, São Vicente, Praia Grande, Mongaguá, Itanhaém, and Peruíbe.
In addition to emphasizing the benefits of privatization in terms of the port’s competitiveness while arguing for the concession of the port authority, Tarcísio stated that the region has grown poor, with the housing scene dominated by the presence of houses on stilts. Moreover, according to the governor, organized crime currently controls the region.
Citing economic development as one of the pillars of his government ahead of Sao Pulo, Tarcísio pointed out the need for the state to attract investments in energy since it brings in 70% of what it consumes in energy from outstate. “São Paulo has to be a locomotive and not a steam train,” he said.
