São Paulo leads the way among Brazilian states in terms of trade with the USA, Brazil’s second-largest trading partner after China. From January to September this year, São Paulo’s sales to the American market amounted to $6.7 billion, while imports reached $9.6 billion, resulting in a trade deficit of $2.9 billion in trade between São Paulo and the United States for the period. These figures are from the Brazil-US Trade Monitor, prepared by Amcham Brasil.

In the first nine months of this year, exports to the United States totaled $26.613 billion, representing 32.7% of all exports from Brazil to the United States. The main products in the export lineup were classified as aircraft, civil engineering equipment, and crude oil.

Next in line was Rio de Janeiro, with total exports of $5.0 billion (equivalent to 18.9% of the total trade between Brazil and the United States), focusing on semi-finished iron and steel products, petroleum, non-electric motors, and machinery. Minas Gerais ranked as the third-largest exporter to the United States among Brazilian states. Thanks to substantial sales of pig iron, coffee, and inorganic chemicals, Minas Gerais’ exports reached $2.6 billion, accounting for 9.9% of total shipments to the American market.

Following in the ranking were Espírito Santo (exports worth $2.3 billion and an 8.6% share), involving, among other goods, semi-finished iron and steel products, lime, cement, construction materials, and pulp; and Rio Grande do Sul, which exported items such as weapons, ammunition, tobacco, and footwear, with a value of $1.5 billion, equivalent to 5.6% of all Brazilian exports to the world’s largest economy.
