The Port of São Sebastião has been fined R$700,500 for operating without an environmental license since October 2018. The port was issued a license in 2010 by the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), valid until 2018. In 2010, Ibama outlined eleven conditions which needed to be met before the license could be renewed, however, according to Portos e Navios, these conditions were not met.
Some of the conditions stipulated by Ibama included the creation of plans for waste management, water and soil monitoring and biological monitoring as well as the need for the port to apply for a new environmental license 120 days before the old one expired, enough time for Ibama to assess progress made. However, the conditions were not met and a new license was requested in October 2018, two months after the previous one expired.
The Port of São Sebastião handled cargoes worth R$17.2m in 2018, including vehicles manufactured in São Paulo. The port management has informed it is currently taking all necessary actions to secure approval of a new environmental license.
