Saudi Arabia resumes imports of Brazilian beef after the pause caused by ‘mad cows’ disease

On Thursday, September 16th, Saudi Arabia resumed beef imports from five slaughterhouses in Minas Gerais, according to the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA), the government agency that regulates food and medicine in the country, on its official website. Imports had been suspended on September 6th, after the confirmation of an atypical case of ‘mad cows disease’ in the state.
The embargo had affected a unit of Plena Alimentos SA, in Pará de Minas; two from Supremo Carnes, in Ibirité and Campo Belo; one from MaxiBeef Carnes, in Carlos Chagas; and another from Dimeza Alimentos, of the Fricon Group, in the municipality of Contagem.
The measure of the Saudis had come into force on the very day that the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) concluded that the two cases of the disease, identified in Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso, do not pose a risk to the Brazilian beef production chain.
Now, Brazil is focused on advancing negotiations with China to free up the beef export market, which was voluntarily interrupted by Brazil while more information about the cases was being analyzed.
