Shell announces new green hydrogen pilot project at Açu Port

The Brazilian chapter of Shell and the Açu Port signed, on May 19, a memorandum of understanding for the development of a new green hydrogen pilot plant at the facilities of the port complex in São João da Barra, located in the north of Rio de Janeiro.

The unit is expected to be ready for operation in 2025 and will have an initial capacity of 10 megawatts (MW), possibly reaching 100 MW in the future.

Initially, the electrolysis plant will be supplied with electricity from the grid.

Renewable hydrogen will be the primary product. A portion of the output will be stored before being shipped to potential customers.

The remaining hydrogen will be destined for the renewable ammonia generation plant.

The oil company plans to build the unit with resources from the ANP’s Research, Development, and Innovation (RD&I) clause. Shell expects to invest between US$60 million and US$120 million in RD&I in 2022.

The first phase of the project alone could require between US$20 million and US$40 million in investments, according to information from Reuters.

The rule determines the contribution in the RD&I area of up to 1% of the gross revenue generated by fields of high profitability or with high production volume. In 2022, Shell Brasil expects to invest between $60 million and $120 million in R&D.

“With this pilot project, we hope to promote the development of the renewable hydrogen value chain, from technology providers to plant operation and specialized labor training. Besides this, we intend to enable a series of decarbonization proofs of concept. It will be a true laboratory for generating knowledge and value for both Shell and the country,” said André Araujo, president of Shell Brasil.

Globally, Shell has green hydrogen generation projects in Germany, the Netherlands, and China.
