Executives from the Yantian Port Group, led by the Government of Shenzhen, China, visited the Miguel de Oliveira Port Terminal in Bahia on Sunday (June 02). The group specializes in port construction, investment, operation, integrated logistics, and support services. They were hosted by the Secretariat of Economic Development (SDE), Bahiainveste, a Bahian asset company, and Bahia State Ports Company (Codeba). The visit highlighted the potential opportunities for Yantian, which is set to take over the former Ford terminal, now an asset of Bahiainveste.
“We are thrilled to welcome the operators from the Port of Shenzhen and to learn of their interest in operating the terminal, which will manage imports and exports across various segments,” said Angelo Almeida, Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Development. “In addition to BYD, two more Chinese companies, Goldwind and Sinoma, are interested in using the site for manufacturing wind turbines and blades. This visit underscores the range of opportunities in Bahia for producing green products for export. Last month, we celebrated 50 years of bilateral relations between Bahia and China, and we are committed to strengthening this relationship further.”
Almeida also highlighted the significant demand in two key sectors: agribusiness and mining. Western Bahia is a major producer of agricultural commodities, particularly soybeans, corn, and cotton. Additionally, Bahia is the third-largest producer of iron ore in Brazil.
After meetings at the SDE office, the delegation toured the private terminal at the Port of Aratu in Candeias. The project will be managed by Bahiainveste. Paulo Guimarães, president of the asset company, emphasized the strategic advantages for the operator.
“The private terminal is adjacent to the Camaçari Industrial Complex, the largest chemical complex in Latin America, at the Port of Aratu, where liquid and gaseous materials are transported. The port currently cannot meet all the complex’s needs. With the terminal’s functionality, we can serve BYD, the Camaçari Industrial Complex, and the wind industries,” said Guimarães.
