Ship crew abandoned at the Port of Santos receive four months of back wages

The crew of a ship docked and abandoned at the Port of Santos, off the coast of São Paulo, received four months of back wages, according to the Public Ministry of Labor. The amount amortizes part of the amount owed to the ship’s crew.

The Panamanian vessel Srakane has been docked since April on the left bank of the Port of Santos, in Guarujá. During an inspection, the crew was found to have been abandoned without water or food. Three companies represent the shipowners of the ship, in charge of carrying out local and international maritime transport.

In April, the Public Ministry of Labor in Santos filed a public civil lawsuit against the three companies ordering the payment of back wages, medical assistance, and repatriation of the crew. The payment was made by an insurance company and is for four months of back wages.

The amount was an installment of the total amount owed of US$ 111,000 (R$ 680,700), according to calculations by labor inspectors. The ship remains berthed and can only leave when those responsible hire a new crew and ensure the repatriation of the 15 crew members.

The 1st Labor Court of Guarujá had granted urgent relief so that the three companies in the maritime transport sector would disembark workers who are on board the Srakane vessel. The workers are from Georgia, Ukraine, and Montenegro.

At the time, it was determined that the three companies responsible for the vessel would have to pay their salaries, bear all costs of transport, food, and medical assistance for the sailors, under penalty of a daily fine of R$ 100,000. For now, the crew remains on the ship.
