On July 26, Santos Port Authority (SPA) confirmed positive cases of Covid-19 among the crew of a ship off the coast of São Paulo in the Port of Santos. The vessel was quarantined on the 24th and will remain on the Santos pier for up to 14 days.
The Singapore-flagged MTM Southport is loaded with barrels of ethanol. After SPA confirmed positive cases of the disease among the crew on Monday, the ship was moved to be anchored in Barra de Santos, in quarantine for at least two weeks.
The MTM Southport arrived at the Santos pier on July 20th, coming from the Port of Salvador, Bahia. The move to the anchorage area took place on the night of the 25th. According to ANVISA (the national health surveillance agency), the ship has 23 crew members, 14 of which have been confirmed with Covid-19.
The sick crew members are isolated on board, and none of them are in serious condition. So far, there has been no need to disembark for medical reasons. There is also no evidence to link the cases to suspected Covid-19 variants of concern, such as the delta variant.
