Singapore authorizes imports of Brazilian shellfish
Aug, 24, 2023 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202335
The Brazilian government celebrated the decision of Singapore to approve the sanitary conditions required for importing frozen shellfish (such as shrimp and lobster) and bivalve mollusks (like oysters and mussels) from Brazil.
The international health certificate currently in force, which has been renegotiated, previously allowed domestic exports of fish from either the extractive fishing industry or industrial fish farming.
This announcement marks a significant achievement considering Singapore’s significant per capita consumption of these products, averaging about 22 kg of fish annually. In 2022, Singapore imported approximately US$937 million worth of fish, primarily from Malaysia, China, and Norway. Within this volume, Singapore shellfish purchases accounted for US$223 million, while mollusks accounted for US$115 million.
Brazil’s recent achievement parallels the country’s recent access gain to the processed beef and pork market in Singapore. Both achievements result from collaboration between the Ministries of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) and Foreign Affairs (MRE).
