Sorghum: Uruguay about to close agreement to export to China
Aug, 08, 2022 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202233
The government of Uruguay announced an improvement in negotiations to get China’s permission to export sorghum to that country. This is a huge step forward in allowing Uruguayan sorghum shipments to the Asian country. According to the Uruguayan Ministry of Agriculture, China is the world’s biggest sorghum importer, having bought the equivalent of US$ 3 billion in 2021. As a result, ratifying this agreement will help diversify Uruguayan exports to that country.
The process of licensing sorghum grain from Uruguay to be consumed by animals began in 2018, with the presentation of technical data requested for the pest risk analysis, which decides the phytosanitary measures to be employed. After rigorous technical discussions, Uruguay was able to broaden the qualification to encompass human consumption and strike an agreement with China regarding the list of worrisome quarantine pests in 2021.
Previously, China has implemented on-site visits for Uruguay soybean, barley, and corn before granting the export authorizations. However, it was not considered necessary this time, which facilitated the phytosanitary authorization process.
