Approximately 25 million liters of soybean oil were transported to China via the Port of São Francisco do Sul, in the south of Brazil, over the weekend.

The cargo was split between two ships: the Atlantic Crown carried 15 million liters, and the Pacific Jasper took 10 million liters.

The oil was transferred from Bunge’s private terminal, located within the port complex, to Berth 101 through a 25 cm diameter hose.

The 1,200-meter pipeline was installed next to the so-called “export corridor,” a structure with a conveyor belt through which soybeans and corn flow from the Bulk Terminal to ships.

440 thousand liters per hour

Both operations were completed in record time, with an average loading of 440,000 liters per hour. The procedure was coordinated by Litoral, the port operator responsible for handling the cargo.

Thus, the Port operators took 31 hours to load the Atlantic Crown and 25 hours with the Pacific Jasper.

“The Port of São Francisco do Sul is multimodal. We have proved that we are prepared to handle any form of bulk cargo, even vegetable oil, which we had not exported in a long time,” stated Cleverton Vieira, president of the port.

He also explained that the port mobilized a special team since the cargo posed greater hazard risks in the event of a leak.

“Loading 25 million liters in just over two days, without any mishap, is proof that the operation was a success, largely thanks to the efficiency, preparation, and competitiveness of all the teams involved in the operation.”

Conflict in Ukraine

The increase in soybean oil exports by Brazil in 2022 is driven by the war in Eastern Europe, as Ukraine is an essential supplier of sunflower oil.

With the impossibility of receiving this product due to interrupted shipments, several countries are substituting it for soybean oil.
