SPA launches public bid for an Internet of things (IoT) in the Port of Santos

On January 7, Santos Port Authority (SPA) launched a public bid to receive a donation of a project and technical studies to subsidize the eventual implementation of a long-range (LoRa) wireless network to implement an Internet of Things (IoT) in the Port of Santos. Interested parties will have 30 days to request authorization to participate in the process.
For SPA, enabling the facilitation of public or shared networks with the use of technologies such as the IoT is strategic for port administration, as it optimizes port logistics, providing efficiency, security, speed, precision, connectivity, and reducing costs. For this, it was evaluated that the LoRa-type wireless network system is, from an operational aspect, suitable for port activities.
The public bid aims to stimulate and guarantee transparency in the realizations of study donations to support the implementation of the most appropriate model for the IoT service within the Organized Port Polygon. SPA carried out a survey with tenants in the Port of Santos and learned that more than 20% are interested in applying IoT in sensors for air-humidity, elevators, temperature, proximity, speed, presence, and monitoring of yard spaces. More than 40% showed strong interest in sensors for rain, fire, gas leakage, and the environment. And more than 50% were interested in sensors for equipment control, asset movement, identification systems, motion detection, and energy meters.
Those interested in participating in the process have 15 calendar days to request clarifications regarding the authorization to prepare the studies, of which the requests and responses will be made public on the Port of Santos website.
After the publication of the authorized parties, the parties will have 60 days to present the results of their work to the Port Authority. The donated studies will not generate any right to compensation, advantage, or preference for those involved in their preparation or for potentially interested parties. The results presented may be rejected, mixed, or partially used, according to convenience and pertinent proceedings of the public administration.
The call notice was published in the Federal Register and is available (with all information on registration, the scope of studies, and applications) at http://www.portodesantos.com.br/wp-content/ uploads / Edital-Chamamento-Publico-LORA-IOT1.pdf.
The Internet of Things in the port environment
The Internet of Things, the ability to connect devices and objects through a digital network, has great potential for optimizing the use of port infrastructure and improving its management, helping to reduce queues and congestion in peak loads. The technology can facilitate container movement, monitor and control access times, activate equipment, and control machines – such as cranes, or even preventive maintenance. This can provide not only valuable information on fine-tuned operations but also future opportunities through the analysis of collected data. As part of the daily routine, this data could imply a break in the supply chain, equipment failures, and several other aspects of the application of artificial intelligence to the port process.
