For the first time, the Port of Pecém (CE) unloaded two giant transformers from a container ship, weighing 184.6 tons each. The special operation was completed on 08/09.
The two power transformers were produced by the company WEG and shipped at the Port of Imbituba (SC) in a container ship of the Alliance regular shipping line. The trip took eight days.
According to the Coordinator of Operations of the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex – CIPP, José Alcântara, the choice for maritime modal was appropriate because it represents the fastest and least costly transfer. “Because of the large size of the equipment, if it was displaced by land it would take about 30 days,” says the coordinator.
The transformers were unloaded in berth 8 of the Multi Utility Terminal (TMUT). For this purpose, a 500-ton crane was used, specially leased to enable the operation coordinated by CIPP and executed by APM Terminals, one of the operators in the Port of Pecém.
“This operation opens up a range of possibilities for similar new operations in container ships here at Port of Pecém, showing its capacity and flexibility to meet new demands. Now the transformers will be stored and then will be sent by land to their final destination,” says the Executive Director of Operations of CIPP, Waldir Sampaio. The two transformers will be used to form a wind farm in the Serra do Mel, in Rio Grande do Norte.
