Steel imports rise 103% in 6 months
Jul, 22, 2021 Posted by Ruth HollardWeek 202129
Flat steel imports soared this year. The constant price readjustments and a period of shortage made local consumers look for steel abroad to maintain their operations. According to data from INDA (the national institute of steel distributors), in the first half of 2021, imports grew 103.8%, totaling 944,390 tons. In June alone, the increase was 118.1% compared to the same period in 2020, when 226,000 tons were imported.
Flat steel is mostly used in the automotive, appliance, machinery and equipment, capital goods, and construction sectors. The manufacturers in the country are Usiminas, CSN, ArcelorMittal, and Gerdau.
