Stevedores strike at Santos from today

The Santos Dockworkers Union (Sindestiva) started an indefinite strike at 7 am this morning. Dockworkers decided to protest a High Labor Court’s (TST) ruling which permits Santos container terminals to use 100% of their contracted workforce. Sindestiva argues the court decision has simply annulled all the previous arrangements agreed between the port companies and the workers.
Sindestiva believes Article 40 of Port Law number 12815 allows for dockworkers to work on contract, as well as on casual terms. A previous 2-year agreement had established a 50-50 ratio where port terminals would hire half the workforce on contract and the other half casual.
The latest reports cite protesters gathered in front of the Labor Management Organization (Ogmo) at 7 am today. Federal Police and Port Guards were seen on site.
