Strategic Rail and Port Developments Set to Transform Grain Exports from Mato Grosso

The city of Lucas do Rio Verde, a major farming hub in Mato Grosso, is at the forefront of a key logistics transformation with the expansion of Ferronorte, a strategic rail project set to revolutionize grain transport in the region. According to Pedro Palma, CEO of Rumo, the railway is already under construction and, within five years, will significantly boost the volume of cargo transported to the Port of Santos, further increasing export capacity for Mato Grosso’s agribusiness sector.
The Ferronorte expansion, which includes the construction of strategically placed terminals every 150 to 200 kilometers, aims to ensure the efficient outpour of the state’s growing grain yields. The first terminal along the railway extension is already being built in Primavera do Leste, 160 kilometers from Rondonópolis. The railway will extend to Lucas do Rio Verde, cementing the city’s role as a key player in Brazil’s agribusiness supply chain.
Meanwhile, the Port of Santos is slated for expansion to meet this new demand, with an expected increase in cargo capacity by 10 million tonnes. Rumo’s focus is on ensuring that Santos may continue to serve the Southeast Asian market, which consumes 85% of Brazil’s grain exports. Despite considering alternative export routes, Palma emphasized that Santos’ geographic location remains ideal for Brazil’s grain exports.
Additionally, incoming investments in the Paulista Railway Network and the internal rail system at the Port of Santos are certain, making sure Mato Grosso’s increasing agricultural output will reach international markets without logistical bottlenecks. Lucas do Rio Verde, with its growing prominence in Brazil’s agricultural landscape, stands to be one of the biggest beneficiaries of these infrastructure improvements, enabling continued growth in grain production and exports.
As this rail and port infrastructure develops, Lucas do Rio Verde’s future is tightly intertwined with the expansion of Brazil’s agribusiness. Ferronorte’s growth not only offers an opportunity for local economic development but also strengthens Mato Grosso’s position as a global leader in grain exports.
