Representatives from the National Department of Infrastructure and Transportation (Dnit) visited the Estrela Port, along with the Estrela Logistics Company (E-Log), last week. The purpose of this event was to present the results of a study on navigation along the Taquari River, as well as go over the actions that need to be taken to resume vessel operations and cargo movement at the terminal.
The city government has been working to restore large-scale navigation on the river. To support this goal, Dnit introduced the Taquari Waterway project, which will be implemented in phases and will determine routes, the type of vessels safe for use, and the necessary improvements to the Bom Retiro do Sul lock. Dnit has already opened a tender and will invest R$ 85 million, which will increase the water level of the Taquari.
According to a study conducted by CHD, there is “great navigational potential” in the Taquari River. Gilberto Loureiro Mácola, Director of CHD, stated that navigation is possible around 90% of the year. Additionally, the river showed a minimum three-meter depth. He emphasized that the Taquari does not have rapids and would only experience occasional interruptions in navigation during periods of heavy rains or prolonged droughts. The study assessed the conditions on a river stretch from Estrela to São Jerônimo, totaling 84 kilometers of waterway.
Elaine Strehl, President of E-Log, which manages the port, highlighted the significance of the department’s visit. “This event holds great significance for the development of our city and the entire Taquari Valley. Since the creation of E-Log, we have been working to unlock the full use of the port. We are pleased to see that this goal is becoming more and more of a reality,” she noted.
During the morning at Expointer in Esteio, Mayor Elmar Schneider of Estrela and Director Andressa Träsel met with the State’s Vice-Governor Gabriel de Souza, who reaffirmed the strategic importance of Porto de Estrela for the development of Rio Grande do Sul. “Ever since I presided over the Assembly, Mayor Schneider has emphasized the importance of this mode of transportation. With support from the federal government, the necessary investments will take place,” Souza stated.
