Study shows 22.9% increase in fertilizer imports

A study conducted by the National Supply Company (Conab) reveals a significant increase in Brazilian fertilizer imports from 2019 to 2023, with the Port of Paranaguá maintaining its position as the primary entry point for these items. Over the five-year period, fertilizer imports in Brazil rose by 22.9%.

According to Conab’s Logistics Yearbook, Brazil received 34 million tonnes of fertilizers from abroad in 2019, a figure that surged to over 42 million tonnes by 2023. The terminals at the Port of Paranaguá alone handled 9 million tonnes in 2019, which increased to 10.53 million tonnes in 2023.

The study also identifies the top three states importing fertilizers: Mato Grosso, accounting for 16.6% of the total volume, followed by Rio Grande do Sul with 15.7%, and Paraná with 13.7%.

Recent investments in the maritime infrastructure at the Paranaguá terminal have enhanced operational capabilities, enabling the port to accommodate larger ships. The static storage capacity at the Ports of Paraná exceeds 3 million tonnes of fertilizers.

Gabriel Vieira, Director of Port Operations at the Ports of Paranaguá, highlighted the impact of investments in dredging and demolition works: “These investments have increased the operational draft for large ships to 12.8 meters. This improvement enhances efficiency by allowing these ships to carry more products in a single operation, thereby reducing logistics costs.”

The terminals in Paraná have an average daily reception capacity of approximately 30,000 tonnes, and the infrastructure available for unloading ensures efficient and swift operations. The port features three dedicated berths at the public pier, two serving the private pier, and two additional berths in Antonina.

According to Comex Stat, a portal providing free access to Brazil’s foreign trade statistics, the country imported 7.184 million tonnes of fertilizers in the first quarter of this year. Of this volume, 1.88 million tonnes—27% of the total—were handled by the Ports of Paraná. The main countries exporting fertilizers to Brazil through these ports are China, Russia, and Canada.
