Suape launches bidding notice for the internal channel

The government of Pernambuco and the federal government will launch the bidding notice for the internal navigation channel of the Port of Suape on December 22, aiding several companies present at the complex, such as Tecon Suape, APM Terminals (under development), and various other operators using public berths. The project will position Suape among the ports with the highest operational capacity in the country, alongside Itaguaí (RJ) and Paranaguá (PR).
According to Suape’s president, Márcio Guiot, the intervention will cost between R$250 million and R$300 million, with R$100 million already secured by the new Growth Acceleration Program (PAC), which will also include improvements to the breakwater with an additional R$30 million.
The intervention complements the dredging of the external channel, which directly benefits oil and liquid bulk operations. The completion of the outer channel dredging, which began on December 1, was the first step for Suape to receive large vessels. The process will increase the channel depth to 20 meters and draft to 17.3 meters, enough to accommodate Suezmax-type oil tankers requiring 16.1 meters of draft.
In the internal dock, after dredging services, the draft will increase to 16.2 meters, enough to receive vessels with a capacity exceeding 14,000 TEUs. Suape already receives 14,000 TEU vessels, but only after they lighten their load. “Today, we are a secondary port, and with the dredging of the external channel, turning basin, and internal channel, we want to become a port hub,” emphasizes Guiot.
Dredging services are expected to begin in the middle of next year, with a 12-month execution period. “The completion of the services is scheduled for June 2025, putting Suape in a position to compete on the main international routes that currently do not pass through here.”
According to Márcio Guiot, Suape is expected to end the year with a cargo movement of 16,000 tons, and with the interventions, the expectation is to reach 25,000 tons. Another highlight of port operations this year was automobiles. According to preliminary port data, the vehicle terminal will end 2023 with a log of 70,000 cars, doubling the volume recorded last year. The movement is expected to reach 600,000 TEUs in containers, surpassing the 500,000 TEUs mark.
“Today, the main international routes do not pass through here due to limitations. That’s why we don’t export fruits from the Valley through here. Now, we will have two global operators (ICTSI/Tecon and Maersk/APM) with dredging, greater operational capacity, and competitiveness. I am confident that we are experiencing a good moment. We will become a hub, also handling transshipment cargo.”
