Suape to export more grains from Brazil’s northeast

Matopiba, a region that encompasses the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí, and Bahia, currently represents 10% of all exports of grain and fiber in Brazil, mainly soybeans, corn, and cotton. The SUA Granéis consortium, which recently acquired the Solid Bulk Terminal of the Port of Suape and is led by companies Agemar, Loxus, and Marlog, claims that the region is its main focus in terms of grain shipments.

“Matopiba is on our radar!” says Manoel Ferreira, director of SUA Granéis. According to data by the National Supply Company (Conab), the grain harvest in Brazil’s northeast is expected to grow by almost 17% in 2022. As a result, the harvest is expected to reach around 28 million tonnes, the highest volume on record. Soybeans, the region’s grain crop, corresponds to more than half of the region’s grain output, with more than 14 million tonnes.

“Seven of the nine states in the northeast should drive production up. Three of them are part of the Matopiba region. Maranhão, Piauí, and Bahia should see a crop yield of nearly 26 million tonnes, almost 90% of the total,” emphasizes the director.

Another factor that calls attention to this region is its storage capacity and the large number of ports equipped for fertilizer landings.

According to Conab, in order to boost grain harvest in the northeast, the planted area was extended by 9%, in addition to productivity increase, which resulted in increases of roughly 7%.

SUA Granéis, in addition to Matopiba grains, focuses on cargoes such as petroleum coke, sugar, soda, and fertilizers, as well as general cargo and neo-bulk cargo.

The consortium, led by the Pernambuco company Agemar, whose partners are Marlog from Paraíba, and Loxus, from Paraná, plans to invest around R$ 60 million in items such as the acquisition of road reception systems, modern belt conveyor equipment, and the expansion of the storage area.

“We want to make all of the essential resources available to ensure high productivity and to offer solutions that represent a differentiation for the sector,” says the director.
